Oil Spill Cleanup- What Really Works!

The recent oil spill that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico has caught everyone’s attention around the globe. With the situation getting worse by the day creating, it has raised concern from everywhere. The catastrophe began with the sinking of the rig followed by the explosion. Later, it was discovered that there were two leaks which were actually leaking 5,000 barrels of oil per day greatly threatening the ecosystem as well as the livelihood of those who depend on the marine resources.

Have you ever wondered as to how the crew goes about containing and cleaning an oil spill of such high volume? There are various factors, such the spontaneous response of the crew, the intensity of oil spill, the techniques used in oil spill cleanup, and weather conditions, which affect the whole process.

In case of any oil spill, the containment and skimming method for oil spill cleanup greatly depends on how early the crew manages to reach the site. Use oil spill booms to prevent the oil from spreading and enable easy skimming of oil with the help of boats is one method used. These orange booms work as a barrier and stop the oil from spreading. But these booms often prove futile during unfavorable weather conditions.

Any new inventions, such as waste hair balls, straw gobs, and dried mushroom-bit, which may seem innovative and effective, will not help in immediate recovery as most of them are not approved by the government and they cannot meet the immediate logistic needs as well. Dispersants are also used as an oil spill remediation method. But the drawback with such dispersants is that most of them are kerosene-based and hence toxic.

Of all the techniques, bioremediation can be termed as the most reliable and safe method for oil spill cleanup. Since water and air are warmer throughout the year in the Gulf of Mexico, it will only speed the bioremediation process.

One such EPA-approved bioremediation product that not only aids in oil spill containment, but also in removing oil stains from clothes, shoes, boat, and land, is Oil Gone Easy S-200.

I agree that America is on the wrong track, but England and
France certainly do not have much room to lecture Americans
about intelligence, morality, or politics. We’ve only been
in the Colonialism business for about two or three years.
England and France did it for centuries. You may think “blood
for oil” sounds bad, but try “blood for opium” which England
and France did to the Chinese. Later the French aggressively
engaged in opium smuggling in Southeast Asia, which was really
the mainstay of the Vietnam conflict. Ever heard of the
Golden Triangle? If not, ask the French. They’re experts on
the subject.

Regarding China, the British and the French forced China to
import opium during two opium wars in the 19th Century, which
created an enormous addiction problem in China. And I have
little doubt that the war in Afghanistan–a war which
incidentally John Kerry completely endorsed–is another
“blood for opium” deal. But where do you suppose America
picked up such nasty habits? England and France are the
teachers and America is merely the student.

Regarding the Vietnam War, if you want to blame the original
troublemaker for that conflict, a large share of the blame must
be given to France. They created the situation by not giving
Vietnam its freedom, and by exploiting and profiteering from
the illicit sale of opium from that region. America made a mistake by
liberating France from Nazi Germany in WWII, because in doing
so, we oppressed Vietnam and the other countries under French
occupation. Sure, France has become more “enlightened”
towards war and human rights in recent years, but only after
Hitler kicked the living shitt out them. So yes, America is
on the wrong track because we’ve gotten into the business of
Colonial occupation. But we certainly do not need a lecture
from the people who practically invented it, namely England and
France.

Hi, i have a mitsubishi lancer 1999, 1.3 .
only brought from a friend. i wanted to change the oil, so under the car i looked and saw a bolt which said “oil”. i opened it and collected only about HALF liter of oil(?) the came out, it was very yellowish. After i looked for the oil filter and saw it was at the other side of the car. (the left) unscrewed that replaced it to. poured oil into the engine and left it run. the dipstick showed it too full. just for pig iron i unscrewed the bolt at the right of the car underneath which said “oil” and nothing came out after pouring about 3 liters in. i drove around a bit (thought it might need to run through) and unscrewed it again and nothing coming out. the dipstick said way too much. looking under the car again i saw another bolt next to the oil filter. this is the oil sump bolt. the oil gushed out. all 3 + liters.so i had to go buy more oil lol. so my question is, what the hell was the bolt over the right underneath of the car that said oil on it??

maybe you drained the gear oil the first time, its normally yellow ish but i would expect a few litres to pour out! you beta make sure your car has gear oil in it as this will lead to gearbox failure if its not filled up to the correct level!!

The 1969 Oil Spill – A Threat to the Environment Even Today

The oil spill that occurred on January 28, 1969 in Buzzardâs Bay off Cape Cod, when a barge ran aground resulted in the spilling of 200,000 gallons of oil. Like other oil spills, this too had a severe ecological impact. Not only was the seabird population affected, even shorebirds and diving birds faced enormous problems.

But, what makes one talk about this oil spill even today is the fact that, even after four decades of this oil spill, researchers have found compelling evidence that the aftereffects of this spill still exists even after extensive oil spill cleanup.

Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy have found evidence that the marine environment still contains oil, even though the surface sediments appear fine. The study revealed that though the top two inches or the lower three inches of the core didnât contain any petroleum residue, the central section of the sediment core had petroleum hydrocarbons similar in concentration to those found in the 1969 Oil Spill.

Several other studies have further proved that wildlife and salt marsh too are facing the aftermath of this oil spill. It has taken a huge toll on the sea grass beds and fiddler crabs of Wild Harbor’s marshland. There has been a significant change in the population, burrowing behavior, escape response, and feeding rate of fiddler crabs in Wild Harbor. When compared to the fiddler crabs in nearby Great Sippewissett marsh, these crabs dug short burrows because of residual oil. It has also been proven that the harmful oil residues in the sediments have hindered microbial degradation in these salt marshes.

These findings show how devastating oil spills can be. So, it gives us all the more reason to take steps to not only prevent oil spills, but also do a thorough job of oil spill containment and oil spill cleanup.

The modeling results are captured in a series of dramatic animations produced by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and collaborators. The colors represent a dilution factor ranging from red (most concentrated) to beige (most diluted). The simulations do not make any assumptions about the daily rate or total amount of oil spilled and the dilution factor does not attempt to estimate the actual barrels of oil at any spot. Instead, one unit per day of a liquid “dye tracer” is injected in the model at the spill site (injected continuously over the period April 20 through June 20). The animation on this page shows possible scenarios of what might happen to dye released in the upper 65 feet of ocean at the spill site. The dilution factor depicts how dye released at the site of the spill will be progressively diluted as it is transported and mixed by ocean currents. For example, areas showing a dilution factor of 0.01 would have one-hundredth the concentration of oil present at the spill site. The animation is based on a computer model simulation, using a virtual dye, that assumes weather and current conditions similar to those that occur in a typical year. One of the largest oil spill disasters occurred in the Galician coast of Spain in 2002. Prestige, an oil tanker carrying 77,033 metric tons of oil, sank when one of its tanks burst, spilling more than 20 million gallons of oil into the sea.

The marine ecosystem of Galicia rich in coral reefs comprising different species of sharks and birds was greatly affected. The polyaromatic hydrocarbons contained in the spilled oil poisoned plankton, fish eggs, and crustaceans and caused carcinogenic effects in fish and animals. The fishing industry also suffered heavy losses as offshore fishing had to be put on hold for the next 6 months.

As part of the massive oil spill cleanup efforts, underwater oil spill containment operations were carried out. First the leakage was reduced to 20 liters a day by sealing the cracks in the hull. Later the oil was pumped into aluminum shuttles by drilling small holes in the wreck.

Oil Gone Easy S-200, an eco-friendly product was used to clean up the beaches that were affected by the Prestige oil spill. This product uses the bioremediation process to help convert polluting hydrocarbons into harmless byproducts using the microorganisms present in the environment, thus cleaning up the oil spill in an environmentally-friendly way.

The field survey on the use of S-200 in Cantabrian coast in northern Spain by the Department of Microbiology, University of Barcelona revealed that S-200 had increased the biodegradation rate of high molecular weight hydrocarbons like benzenes. Surprisingly, there was a significant reduction of harmful diasteranes and C-27 sterane components.

The pollution caused by the Prestige oil spill will continue to affect marine population in the coming decade. The main cause of oil spills is human apathy and negligence. As it causes severe damage to the ecosystem everyone should take due care to protect Mother Nature.

Most of the people along coastal areas depend on tourism for income. The restrictions imposed on recreational activities, such as diving, bathing, and boating in the polluted area affect tourism. Fishing industry is another prominent sector that bears the brunt of oil spills. Contamination or death of commercial marine animals and plants result in economic loss for the fishermen. A Contingency Plan is a strategy that is prepared in anticipation of an oil spill. A quick and effective response minimizes oil spill damage and institutes effective and practical plans for all types of oil spill cleanup.

A typical contingency plan comprises the following: Identification of authority and chain of command and listing of persons and organizations that must be immediately informed of an oil spill. The emergency plan should make a record of available trained spill personnel and spill response equipment. It should also list jobs to be done in the order of priority, organize a communication network to coordinate response and identify probable oil movement patterns under different weather conditions. Using all this information sensitivity maps and other technical data should be compiled.

Contingency planners must know important physical and biological resources within or near the region, such as marshes and vital habitat areas required by particular species for spawning, feeding, or migration. Information regarding tides, currents, and local climatic conditions, weather patterns, and shoreline characteristics should be gathered by planners.

When an oil spill occurs, the spilled oil is washed ashore and results in contamination of shore lines. Quick and effective oil spill cleanup prevents the oil being mixed or buried in the sediment.

Shoreline cleanup methods include physical herding, using barriers or berms, pressure washing, manual cleaning, sedimentation, removal of oil debris, and more. Other cleanup methods, such as use of solidifiers, fertilizers for biological remediation, in situ burning, and shoreline cleaning agents can be used after obtaining special permission from authorities.

Sensitive coastal areas are likely to be affected by oil spills as well as oil spill cleanup methods. Therefore, it is necessary to get a thorough insight into the affected area before using a particular oil cleanup method.

Waste materials, such liquid oil, oil mixed with sand, and tar balls can be sometimes reused or should be disposed effectively. Use of environmentally friendly products, such as Oil Gone Easy 200 to clean oil spills or stains minimizes the harmful effects caused by chemicals.

I put some oil “suitable for all engines” in my old mitsubishi space wagon. Since then the engine is continually revving up like a drag car !!

Have I used the wrong oil ? Have I broken the car ? what have i done ?

DRAIN IT AND CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER AND PUT THE CORRECT OIL BACK IN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Oil drums have been set, on their sides, into a brick wall. The tops of the cans have been turned into lids for each separate cavity. There is a soldier doubled over retrieving food from the first drum and the other drums all have items lying in the bottom of them. There are tents and a grass field in the background.

The energy and organisation required to fuel the war effort, to ensure supplies of mundane daily life such as food and clothing were immense. During this period of fluidity these were often the first areas to be affected and so soldiers often had to fend for themselves.

President Obama honored these and other students at the first-ever White House Science Fair on Monday, kicking off a week of events focused on science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) education. Another study recruited 10 males (all subjects had mild to moderate gingivitis), and ran a 45 day oil pulling study. Using sunflower oil, each subject held the oil in their mouths for 8-10 minutes. This study also concluded that oil pulling has the ability to reduce plaque and gingivitis using Sunflower oil (Amith et al., 2007).

As you can see by now, there IS scientific evidence out there and more studies will undoubtedly be conducted in the future. In-situ oil burning is an effective response for oil spill cleanup on the spot. Oil spill cleanup can be accomplished with comparatively lesser manpower and low cost. Though in-situ burning of oil is effectual in oil spill cleanup, this method poses a serious threat to the environment as well as human beings.

In-situ oil burning is also done on water, but it depends greatly on the thickness of the slick, water temperature, wind speed and direction, oil type, and wave amplitude. After in-situ oil burning the residues tend to sink deep into the water system thus paving the way for toxic build up in the water body.
