Question by Fromor: Do you know of a German oil painting “liquid” that is very like turpentine, though much less toxic..?
and it is described as an oil, I heard it described as what sounded like “shellse oil” or “shells oil” I’m not sure of the spelling, it may be more like schells oil, it apparently works well when mixed with stand oil.
Thanks.
I’m asking here as, I don’t expect anyone to know, I think it’s probably rare knowledge.
Thanks

sorry, never heared of it.
What we often use instead of Terpentin is Terpentinersatz
BTW why are you asking in Travel Germany?

I have to agree with Milkman I also never heard anything sounding like that.
The Terpentinersatz is also known as Waschbenzin or Testbenzin but that still sound a lot different.
Also there is a company running gas stations and selling all kind of related products with the name ”Shell” but I can not imagine that would be related.
Linseed oil is used to thin and mix paints.
White spirit is good for cleaning brushes and also thinning paints. It is far less toxic than turpentine and available in the hardware section of any large store.
This question might be better placed in the visual arts section under painting.
