I put some oil "suitable for all engines" in my old mitsubishi space wagon. Since then the engine is continually revving up like a drag car !!

DRAIN IT AND CHANGE THE OIL AND FILTER AND PUT THE CORRECT OIL BACK IN AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

the oil shouldnt be a problem it sounds like a garage visit to me!! i know the bills are not nice but its the only way to sort it out

I don’t think this is anything to do with oil it sounds like the throttle cable is jamming somewhere,
check to see if you have disturbed something whilst adding oil,
Yes drain it use some flushing oil change the filter put the correct oil in and see what happens. Then the garage don’t do anything else it may prve even more expensive
I am assuming you are talking about adding engine oil to the engine and not adding oil to the dash-pot of an older style carburettor (Stromberg or SU are the ones I know).
Changing engine oil – even to the wrong one – can’t cause the ‘revving-up’ you describe. If you use too light a grade, the engine might rev more freely, but only when you hit the throttle. I’d guess you upset something else in the engine bay. Did you adjust anything? Did you disturb any electrical connectors? The first thing is to retrace your steps and look for any oversights. After that, look for anything fouling the throttle cable or any linkages associated with the carburettor or injection system (not sure which you’ve got). Also look for any vacuum tubes that may have come loose (unlikely to cause the problem but won’t help). Is your throttle cable moving freely when the throttle is depressed? If not it could be badly kinked or frayed, though there is no obvious reason the problem would start when you added oil. Good luck from one whose main embarrassing breakdowns were caused by work I’d done on other parts of the car.
No the oil wouldnt not cause your engine to rev high like that. That has something to do with your throttle cable or fuel system. Check around where your throttle cable connect to your fuel injection/ carburetor. See if it is sticking there. If so get some cleaner and spray it on the cable.

Sounds funny, but sometimes cars, as they age, get used to one brand of oil and if you change oil brands, will begin using oil. It’s more likely that you may have accidentally knocked off a vacuum line or another component rather than the oil be the direct fault of the racing.
I’ve seen one time, the air filter not being tightly screwed on and it put pressure on the accelerator cable. That could explain the racing.
The right oil is best, any oil is good, no oil is very bad! I’d look to see if you have upset the throttle linkage while you were under the hood.
hi the oil is not likely to be the problem ,you,ve got a case of bad luck something has gone at the same time as you,ve done the oil or more likely your accidentaly caused the problem by leaning on some linkage around the carb or leaving something jammed it it like a rag or a tool , check by eye so see if there is anything there that shouldn,t be then use carb/engine cleaner spray around the linkage and body of the carb followed once all dry by spray lite oil or even spray copper ease to keep it all lubed then see if thats helped
