i use the cheaper one, a mechanic once told me any oli in a car is better than none at all, like you said not the real cheap one though but a decent one at a sensible price should be ok, well i have had no trouble.
What do you think? Answer below!
My Dad is always telling me that his mechanical engineering lecturer at university told hime that it didn’t really matter what sort of oil you used, just so long as it was changed frequently & clean. It would seem that your idea to use the mid price oil would be fine then!
Depends on the car, and to a lesser extent, the use it gets put to. If it’s a new-ish high performance car, use the good stuff, if it’s an older car, you’d get away with cheaper ones, so long as we’re still talking a basic Shell, Castrol etc.
no, you get what you pay for.
My car is serviced regularly. and always now with castrol gtx. I tried the castrol magnatec, a lot dearer. and my car hated it. It would take all day to list the things and sounds it made or did. so what im saying is ….. use a good oil. its worth the money. but use what oil your manufactor recomends. synthetic oils work just as well in some cars and not in others.
As long as it is the right grade of oil for your engine and you change it at 6000 miles maximum (Including the oil filter)(important !) you shouldn’t have any problems.
Jeeez, I love to say nice things to lovely girlies, mmmmmmmmH
)
Engine sizes have got smaller, engine output has got greater, new engines can create alot more acids within the engine and require detergents in the oil, there are specific gaps in engines that require the correct viscosity of oil to lubricate them. New Audi’s, BMW’s etc require a specific grade of synthetic oil or if you get a problem the garage will void your warranty.
£3.99 oil is normally recycled oil. Then you have mineral oil, part synthetic and synthetic oil. Synthetic oil is harder to break down and is normally used in harsher high power engines.
Years back you changed the oil every 6 months. Now-a-days. servicing schedules have changed alot so just stick to the grade, type and interval level according to your handbook.
It certainly ain’t a con if you break down in a BMW running on chip fat !!!!!!!!!!!!
Only use a synthetic oil if the handbook says so. It is alot thinner oil and I know someone who put it an old car and most of it leaked out.
I would always use the best quality consumables i could afford on my car, just to be sure!
It’s the quality rating on the can that matters. If it meets the standard then it’s OK no matter how cheap.
BUT, the branded stuff does have extras in that improve it’s performance, but you won’t benefit from it unless you habitually thrash your car, have modified it to increase performance or intend to drive it in exceptional conditions. For regular driving in a regular un-modified engine’d car with normal oil change frequency, get the cheapest that meets the rating you need.
cheap oil stinks
Its like cheap anything if its cheap its cheap for a reason. If your cars worth more then £3.99 then why fill it with rubbish.and engine is full off moving parts like you if you was filled with cheap rubbish food you would run badly and after a time become ill.The same with your car.
For an average oil you would pay about £15 for 6 months to a years motors. How often do you use your car.If often then it wouldbe a little expense for your quality of drive and cost less in repairs so your actually saving money.
So its cheaper to get decent oil for a better drive parts last longer smells better.
All this about performance engines only need better oil well it does but lesser powered engines also need to work.turn and bend both have moving parts.
I spend more then the price of decent oil in the pub or at mcdonalds and i run for a day on that and usually feel badly afterwards.
About 15 years ago a neighbour of mine insisted on buying cheap oil for his Vauxhall. I advised to purchase a quality brand. As his car was about 7 years old he decided to buy the cheap brand from a well known DIY outlet. He replaced the oil filter and filled the engine with the new oil. When he started the engine the oil warning light illuminated permanently which did not happen prior to the oil change. He then had to purchase some castrol oil, replace the filter again (as it was now contaminated) and do the job again. It was okay after and never encountered the problem again. He did not save any money, it actually cost him more which I proved was false economy. The research and devolpment involved in the quality comes at a price but you get what you pay for.
Use a name brand oil and a good oil filter with low micron rating, you see benefit from day 1. The secret to oil is filtration as most oils are similar unless you are talking synthetics. You pay a lot for your car treat it right and it will take care of you. The 3000 mile oil change was a big thing back when gas had lead in it. With the new ways they formulate oil now days you can run longer depending on driving habits. Good luck!
