Question by Old Cynic: Why are people willing to believe any old lies peddled about the “evil” EU?
Whether it be garbage like “straight bananas” or “bent cucumbers”, or metrication (which the UK committed to implement in the 19th century, and in the 1960s, long before joining the EU.).
Other bizarre lies included “circus acts could be banned for health and safetly reasons”, “EU to ban school crossing lollipops”, “EU to ban British cheeses”, “EU wants North Sea oil.”
Is there no end to crap people will believe or that the press will make up?

Made up stories are more interesting
and more attractive to the public
so I dont think the press is gonna stop anytime soon ^^
What do you think? Answer below!
Unfortunately, lies sell.
Look, most Americans are really not that bright. Our attention spans are really short and we are easily distracted as a people. So there is no end to the crap people will believe, I am not so sure about what the press will make up. We have one TV news outlet that pretty much puts out exactly what people want to hear. They are the very model of “state run television” although their version of the “state” is not in power at the moment.
Most are probably put out by the EU.
keeps people for finding out the disgusting truth about it.
the sooner the uk leaves the better for us all.
Because we live in a media-driven world where many are sceptics and a majority easily led by propagandist groups.
Because they are not lies. They may be wild exaggerations, but they are all based on some degree of truth.
I do not know about all the points that you mentioned, but the EU directives that specified the allowable conformity of fruit and veg is only now being rescinded, and yes, it DID include a ban on bent cucumbers.
Metrication was seen as necessary for our involvement in Europe, that is why it was introduced. You are right, there had been those who wanted it adopted for about a hundred years, but before we decided we wanted entry into Europe it had always been dismissed as too much trouble, never mind the expense.
Banning British cheeses? Well, some were adversely affected by the Regional Names directive and had to change their name, just as some benefited.
EU wants North Sea oil? The EU has long tried to claim it as a “Strategic European Resource”. If this had been done then it would have been subjected to the same kind of sharing and regulation that encompasses European fishing.
Your question shows that you are being just as blinkered as the “EU is evil” brigade are. Like it or not the ambition behind the EU has always been the development of a ‘United States of Europe’ with common social, legal and business regulation. No multiculturalism there, the aim is that you should be living and working in the same social and industrial environment whether you live in Paris, London, Madrid or Frankfurt, to name just a few places.
And before you dismiss me as an EU hater, I have reluctantly come to believe that Europe is the only hope for our future as all our political parties now seem hell bent on dragging us into a police state. Our continental cousins can still remember what that is like and will resist it. For the UK it has been about 400 years since Cromwell and his ilk so we do not realise the current danger we are in.
Any group that is intent on being a Total Master is to be feared. Britain should be given a referendum as to whether we want to stay in. but it’s an unfortunate but true fact I shouldn’t hold your breath waiting for any government to give us the choice, it would spoil their gravy train after Parliament.
You do the politically enlightened a grave disservice.
We have far greater concerns about the “evil” EU than bananas or cucumbers.
Nor do we believe what we read in the biased media. rather we have come to our views in a well thought out and rational manner.
I suggest you look at some of your examples and acknowledge that existing pathetic legislation is not too different, eg ridiculous health and safety rules.
When it comes to believing “crap” I fear it is the pro EU people who are totally misinformed and misguided.
Lies are easier to believe than the truth.
Saying that, there is a lot wrong with the EU, its accounts for one. With that in mind, those who are against the EU should stick to the facts. There are enough facts about it to convince people to leave it!
Look, the EU is the most unimaginable bureaucratic unproductive organisation you can imagine. They do nothing but churn out unwanted and unneeded legislation because a bunch of bored pen pushers in Brussels have decided they think its a necessary imposition on sovereign governments and people’s lives. There is no net created gain to business or people’s by anything they’ve done and I would challenge anyone to prove otherwise.
Straight bananas and bent cucumbers are merely symbols of the problem.
Most people are sheep who never think about anything . My question for you is , why are you asking this ? It comes across that you are just having a reactionary rant with a view to uphold positive ideas about the EU . Which makes you no more than a sheep either .
Have you actually got something to say ? Have you actually got a lucid opinion about the EU ?
I suggest you can’t see the wood for the trees . Please come back at me with a real , adult argument .
Because it’s largely true + the EU is run in a style similar to the former soviet union.

probably because they are true. We were tricked into joining a Common Market by traitor Heath who knew what he was really signing us into.
After WW2 a top German General told an American news reporter that Germany may have lost the war in Europe but one day it would be ruled by one parliament, have one currency, one set of rules and laws and one army., The only thing they could not impose was one language.
The best thing this country could do is to leave, return to trading with Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the Commonwealth like we used to and managed very well at that. The EU is a monster that needs slaying
Newspapers and magazines make up stories so gullible people will buy their trash.
