Offshore oil rig jobs are fast become one of the most sought after vocations all around the world. However to enter the offshore oil rig sector, one has to have a basic knowledge about what, working on an offshore oil rig job involves
In this article, we look at the drill and other equipment that one has to operate during an offshore oil rig job.
An oil rig job involves extraction of crude oil from an oil well. Oil wells are traditionally dug vertically, but thanks to the expansion of technology related to oil rig jobs, it is now possible to drill horizontally as well. When a well stops yielding oil, that well is discarded and a new one is dug. Just above the well, an oil platform is built. Oil platforms can be either fixed or floating.
Floating type oil rig platforms are held in place using chains and can drill up to a depth of 10,000 feet. Extraction of oil from the sea is far more expensive than extracting it from land because of the construction and maintenance of these platforms.
Various other equipments are also used on oil rig jobs. Oil rig jobs involve the utilization of a crane for the movement of objects around the rig and also for transporting supplies from the supply ship. The well is dug using derricks which are usually mounted on skids.
There is module on the oil rig, called the drilling mud module, in which various chemicals, clay and water are mixed to produce a mixture that cools down the drill bit that is used for drilling. A process module is also part of an oil rig job, and is used to separate the oil and the gas from the water, before it is treated and released into the sea.
A lifeboat system is in place to make an oil rig job as safe as possible for those working on it. The number of life boats on rig is usually planned to cover all people on the rig and still have a few spares. There is also a flame boom that is used to dispense off gases that are not required.
Oil rig jobs that are situated in colder areas may involve the working of equipment such as ice wall and ice teeth that are used to deal with icebergs and other problems that are usually encountered on colder seas.
